Dear humans,
I listened to someone speaking on a podcast the other day and they said something like:
“We put so much pressure on the individual when it comes to wellness. If they are suffering, we blame them. We tell them to improve their self-care, to change their life. But if the collective is suffering, the individual suffers, too.”
I thought this was an amazing way to reframe the challenges of the moment. It seems like it’s been a hard few months. I’ve felt it. But I’ve also talked to my students and seen it in them—noticed their fatigue, their sadness, their fear.
It’s easy to blame ourselves when we are going through a hard time. But what if all the pressure didn’t have to rest on our shoulders alone?
Yoga teaches us that we are not separate, we are one. When you suffer, I suffer. When the world suffers, we suffer.
So, then, the energy and the magic that we create in the yoga studio is even more important. It’s not an individual act or an individual practice—it’s a collective one.
Sometimes, when I’m in the studio, I can feel that palpable, powerful energy of the collective. I’m sure you can, too. It pulses through the air. It provides nourishment and hope.
Our readings this month acknowledge the hardships of being human, but they also give us permission to let go of our heavy layers. To appreciate the magic in each and every moment. They give us the reminder that we’re not alone in this experience of being human, we’re so very connected.
I hope you enjoy them. <3
Sending love,
Izzy
